The Best Days to Shop at Thrift Stores

Timing is everything. Discover which days of the week offer the freshest inventory and deepest discounts.

If you want to maximize your thrift store hauls, timing your visits strategically can make a huge difference. Different stores have different restock schedules, sale days, and donation patterns.

Goodwill stores typically use a color-tag rotation system. Each week, items with a specific color tag go on sale for 50% off or more. Learn your local store's rotation schedule — it's usually posted near the registers.

Monday and Tuesday mornings are often the best times to shop. Weekend donations are sorted and put on the floor by Monday, giving you first access to fresh inventory before the weekend crowds.

The first week of the month tends to have better inventory, as many people clean out their closets at the start of a new month. Conversely, end-of-month sales can offer deeper discounts as stores make room.

Holiday weekends are double-edged swords. While stores may run special sales, they're also more crowded. The sweet spot is shopping the Tuesday after a holiday weekend, when donations from holiday cleanouts hit the floor.

Don't overlook seasonal transitions. When stores switch from winter to summer inventory (and vice versa), out-of-season items are often marked down significantly. Stock up on winter coats in spring for incredible deals.
